Dr. Hemant K. Kalyan is one of
Bangalore’s top Consultants in Orthopedic surgery & Sports
Medicine. He has been one of the city’s pioneers in advanced
arthroscopic surgery and the scientific treatment and
rehabilitation of sports injuries, and has been practising at
Bangalore since June 1993. His areas of special interest and
expertise include minimally invasive surgery and joint
replacements.
He conceptualized and established
OSSICARE, a specialty clinic devoted to the assessment and
treatment of Orthopaedic conditions and Sports Injuries, in
January 2004. This outpatient facility provides a
comprehensive range of professional services in a patient
friendly environment. Since its inception, an excess of 25,000
people have availed of the services on offer.
He
completed his medical graduation from Seth GS Medical College
and KEM Hospital, Bombay, in April 1985 and went on to do his
postgraduate studies and residency training in Orthopaedics at
the same institution. He was awarded gold medals at the MS and
D.Ortho examinations of the Bombay University in April 1989
and was also adjudged Best Resident in Orthopaedics.
He then went on to the University of Nottingham, UK to
undergo specialized clinical training and research in Sports
Medicine at Queens’ Medical Centre. Sports Medicine was an
emerging specialty at the time, and he had the distinction of
being the first Indian to complete a Diploma in Sports
Medicine from the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh in 1991. He also
helped establish and run the Nottingham University Sports
Injury Clinic and was team doctor for the Nottingham Rugby
league Club during his time in the UK.
He then
proceeded to do a clinical Fellowship in Arthroscopy &
Knee Surgery at the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1992,
and ran a Sports Clinic at the Orthopaedic & Arthritic
Hospital, Toronto during his Fellowship training at this
institution.
He returned to India in 1993 and opted to
set up practice in Bangalore. During the period between June
1993 and April 2006, he was Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery
and Sports Medicine at the Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital,
Lakeside Medical Center & Hospital, and Chinmaya Mission
Hospitals, all well-known medical facilities in the city. He
played a pivotal role in developing the Department of
Orthopaedic Surgery at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital during
his tenure at that hospital.
He has been an advisor to
the Sports Authority of India, South Centre, since 1994.
In May 2006, he joined Manipal Hospital Bangalore, the city’s
largest multi- specialty private sector institution,as
Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, and has
been performing all his surgical work at this centre since
then. He presently heads the department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the hospital.
He is a life member of the Indian Medical
Association, Indian Orthopedic Association, Indian Association
of Sports Medicine, Indian Federation of Sports Medicine,
Indian Arthroscopy Society, Indian Society of Hip and Knee
Surgeons, Shoulder Society of India, Bangalore Orthopedic
Society and Karnataka Orthopedic Association.He has served as
Past President of the Indian Medical Association, Bangalore
East branch and Past Secretary of the Karnataka Orthopedic
Association.
He believes in continuously updating his
knowledge and skills and frequently travels overseas to
participate in various speciality conferences and workshops
all over the world. He has been a frequent guest speaker and
faculty at various scientific conferences, surgeon training
workshops and public educational programs on subjects related
to his field all over the country.
